No Druid site would be complete without touching the subject of ecology. My confession is that it has never been an issue with me as I see my way of life to be respectful to the world around me yet it causes problems by ignorance. Time and ability to do more about my lifestyle are two factors that I can dedicate more effort to but what perceptions and feelings do I have to the subject of ecology?

First, as with many things there is no black and white. Second, how real is the threat from mankind. Third, what does this mean for the future of our kind, what is our heritage and just what are we leaving for our descendants.

Modern 'civilisation' has this vain stupidity that makes it think that the good of the world is in it's hands. Conventional thinking is arrogant and blind. Grandmother Nature is not powerless in our defilement of her gifts and it is time that we realised this.

We have poisoned much of Mother Earth but her Mother; Nature can effect a repair to all our damage. As we look to PCB's in the oceans and thin ozone layers we blame ourselves and do not respect what may be true.

Sure we poison and murder Nature's own with impudence, from the Tiger to the Rain Forest, we are despicable destroyers. But Grandmother Nature gave us the selfish greed that leads our madness. And global warming... aren't we evil???

The dinosaurs ruled the world for far longer than we have before being struck down by a mass extinction. From the great landmasses to the ocean's and the skies, no dino's escaped. Yet other creatures far more ancient than the dinosaurs survived and thrived ( sharks for example). Cold-blooded reptiles came through unscathed too.

The meteor theory never washed with me and I have seen the documentaries examining the theory to exhaustion. Why did only warm-blooded reptiles and giant crustaceans peg-out (as we say where I come from).

This theory like the global warming one is an example of the wearer not seeing the blinker's as I have been known to refer to before. Someone comes up with a theory and sets out to find evidence that supports it. Scientists can justify more than a politician and that is a feat and a half. If it catches the popular media it becomes true(ish). Maybe ish anyhow. Learn to feel empathy with our world. Listen to all there is and let truth filter through.

There were several great extinction's during the reign of the Dinosaurs but there was no final end to their kind and no suitable meteor craters either. And what of the current crises?

How often have we seen the causes of global warming extolled on news stories and documentaries? It has been exhausted. This is a fine example of VHS, not BETA. The inferior got in first and grabbed the popular media. How many readers of this article have heard this next statement.

When I sat in a Dentists waiting room around about the summer in 1985 I picked up an old magazine. It was a year or so old and my memory plays tricks here as I am unsure if it was a copy of National Geographic or Time Life, but what the hell.

It ran a story from a British Scientist based in Antarctica.

He had worked there for years studying volcanic activity in the region. He was responding to the new popular myth running on news channels. You're ahead of me now.

He monitored all the active volcanoes there at the time, 80 of them.

Of the 80, all gave out the gasses claimed to cause global warming due to industrialisation.

At a rate of 1,000 years of industrialisation a day. THAT'S A DAY!!!

80,000 years worth of greenhouse gasses a day over the very region first highlighted as the place that the ozone was thinning.

Not heard it? Not popular. A reasoned man talking sense cannot stop the juggernaut of a good story.

That doesn't remove our responsibilities as Nature's children NOT to pollute and modify or destroy. Rainforest's are the lungs of the world and the destruction of these is a more likely danger than industrialisation. That does not remove the heinous damage industry does to the environment however.

So where do we look?

More recently (May 2003) I saw a documentary on a subject that was defined in its own field.

There was no outside consideration of the subject and its effects yet I made the connection myself. As you know the subject I am covering I am sure you will see my link as I progress.

Scientists had been shocked by the realisation that the Earth's magnetic core was dying and if it dies, we all die.

Mar's is known to have no magnetic core yet the limited successful probes have shown that it used to have. Without it there is no atmosphere.

The magnetism creates the atmosphere that protects us from stellar winds and radiation. If the core dies then the atmosphere is simply blown away by stellar winds until it disappears forever.

Fascinatingly it seems that one of the greatest allies in monitoring this natural phenomenon is pottery. Anything taken from the planet displays the magnetic fingerprint for the time it was removed. Clay is an example. Fire the clay and you lock the evidence for eternity (well a long time anyhow).

As pots dating back millennia have been analysed it became obvious that the Earth's core was losing its magnetism. A continuation of this would cause serious greenhouse effects that would see the cancer rate soar and eventually the atmosphere would blow away like the March wind.

Forgive my lack of scientific prose but you see the link.

Research has shown a more likely scenario.

Grandmother Nature is patient as she machinates life in the physical realm and she knows her mind best. She wisely endures her foolish children, even the Frankenstein scientists and Doctors who meddle with her work. Their playing will prove insignificant in the great centuries of time that she winds her spell.

The evidence is there to see.

Prepare to flip as the magnetic core is going into reverse mode and you might be forgiven for not knowing your north from your south...

Magnetic north moves anyhow and British Admiralty records are the most extensive evidence available. It is all part of a pattern that repeats. Why? Dunno but the Grandmother knows.

Geologists have found the evidence that this flipping of poles is not an isolated case but is a fact that has happened before, quite often in fact (at least if you’re eternal but not in the puny reign of man).

Computer analyses has proved that it is hallmarked with exactly the same effects that the core shows presently and in the model used it occurred about every 100,000 years. For research purposes the simulation had to be scaled down but still took years to see and in fact the timescale would be extended.

I don't have the answers but I can ask questions and I want to know the truth about global warming.

Still, we must preserve the lungs of the world. Nature gave us beauty and it should not be destroyed. It won't prevent the greenhouse effect but it may reduce the harm it can do before the core re-establishes itself. By then only our descendants can judge us.
